Here's an image I did a while back for my brother, he asked if I could visualise an image of this forest spirit (kinda forest monster) from a script he gave me to read.
Created in Painter 12FEShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17981731301608493164noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27682205.post-1395843362486245122012-03-26T02:19:00.001+01:002013-02-28T16:47:32.322+00:00How I fixed my GA-X58A-UD3R motherboard to work with 24gb of RAMNo drawings or paintings on this post. This is a post to relieve my frustrations and efforts of days (one whole night too) trying to get my stupid motherboard to work with 24gb of RAM installed (as an upgrade from the 12 I had previously). It's for anyone who has the same problem and hopefully may help, if all else fails.

In case anyone dare says query why would I need 24gb of RAM... well I want to use Vue 10 infinite and it chews through the memory something chronic. It kept coming up with a message saying something like 'running low on resources - increase memory' and crawling along slower than an elderly snail.

Anyway, I bought my extra modules from Crucial, checked they were compatible, bought a matched set of 3x4gb DDR3 - 1333 (PC3 10600) UDIMM 240pin modules. Exactly the same type as my first original set.
So I installed 'em and booted up and whoopee they worked (or so I thought). I worked away happily for most of the day. Then I had to reboot for something.... got past the post screen to then get an error message:

'Detecting DRAM Size'

Eeep!
So the dratted thing reboots 3 times with the same message and on the fourth boot goes to Windows. But I know what this means. I had a similar prob before, so I look at the system properties and sure enough, 24gb of RAM installed, but only 8gb usable on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit rig. I reboot with the same result. URRRGGGHHH.
I googled for all I was worth, I fiddled with the bios, I flashed the bios, I reset the CMOS, I changed the voltage to every suggestion on every help techy site under the sun. I spent one whole night pulling the PC (self build, so at least I knew what went where) to bits, I took off the heat sink, cleaned the paste of the cpu, check the cpu for bend pins (there were none I could detect), reset it, put on more thermal paste (luckily had some spare) put back the heatsink, loosen the heatsink so it was held on by a whisker (advice on one site), swore a lot as my heatsink is a tricky beast requiring three hands to hold it and screw on. Sweated a lot. Swapped around and pushed in and out the memory modules in every combination soo many times my fingers would have bled if I hadn't used the back of an old aunts christmas card to protect my fingies - why is everything inside a PC sooo sharp?!?!?!

Anyway - nothing worked. I could get 12gbs to run in slots 1,3,5 or 2,4,5 and I could get 16gbs if I added a module in 1,3,5,6 or 1,2,3,6 sometimes, but as soon as I added another module anywhere I'd get the error.
I was ready to drop kick the mobo out the window. I'd already started looking online for a new board, but the x58 chipset is becoming redundant and there isn't much to choose from in the UK with a decent spec.

I have the i7 x980 which is still a very good chip, and I can't fork out for an equivalent new one - plus there isn't anything wrong with it.
So, a last ditch round of googling... and I came across this comment from jfoxedge "...I just happened to search for my processor, and found a page on Intel's site that said it only supports 800 and 1066 memory. Manually set my memory to 1066, no more problem. Never displays the "recovering lost DRAM size" message again.......it must have something to do with the 4GB DIMMs and the i7 CPU's".

Soooo, I thought, that is interesting. I have 4gb modules with an Intel i7 chip, now how/where exactly do I set my bios so it reads the dram memory as 1066?!? A bit of head scratching later, this is what I changed in the bios (change in red):

Under MB Intelligent Tweaker(M.I.T), Advanced Memory Settings, change the System Memory Multiplier (SPD) from Auto (which gave my board a setting of 1333mhz) to 8, which equates to 1066mhz.

So I save and exit (PC has a bit of a start - fans whir too fast - and the settings don't 'take' so I do it again and it takes the setting this time). I'd given up on finger crossing by this stage and was waiting for doom to strike. And it loads, no error message, to Windows. I check the system memory and it showed 24gbs installed and usable. I've had this false dawn hope before on first boots, so I reboot, and the same thing all ram shows and is usable. I reboot about 6 times. All is miraculously good!!

And the moral to my story, dear friends (to cut a long one short, which I should have done in the first place perhaps), is if you are using 4gb modules with an Intel i7 chip and your dratted motherboard is showing you the Detecting DRAM Size error message, rebooting 4 times and not working with all your installed RAM, try changing the memory mhz in the bios to 1066mhz.

If this doesn't work for you, I wish you all the luck in the world, or as others have found worked for them, check your cpu doesn't have any bend pins. ;)

*Edit - Additional Info:
After having this fix work perfectly for nearly a year, all of a sudden I had the same DRAM error back again. I went into the bios (getting an initial error message about Overclocking changes that maybe affecting the system) and checked the setting I had made, which hadn't changed at all. However I had added a new piece of hardware the day before (a second ssd in my case), which had booted with perfectly the first day, and I had gone into the bios just to check it was showing up ok, tho I exited without changing or saving anything. I thought, however, that this may have done something to the bios even though everything looked ok (plus all the physical cables etc were fine and the actual RAM hadn't been touched).

So I went back into the bios, changed the (above instructions) 8 back to Auto (I also changed Performance Enhance to Standard) and Saved and Exited. On reboot I went back into the bios and re-put the setting back to 8.0, as per the original fix instructions (changing Standard back to Turbo) and Saved and Exited again.

On reboot there was no error. I've rebooted again 3-4 times and still no error.

So if you have this problem reoccurring, just do the above as it could just be a glitch in the bios.FEShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17981731301608493164noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27682205.post-85761507849999583892010-01-16T21:37:00.005+00:002010-01-16T22:38:31.177+00:00How To Centre your AP Div website in Dreamweaver CS4I was having a bit of difficulty trying to find out how to center/centre a website made with AP Divs in Dreamweaver. I was going to a life drawing session that got canned because the venue was closing. So then I tried to go to one that was further away, which was really good because it was longer and had two models... but it was late on Friday night's and very inconvenient to get to, so I stopped at the end of last year. I'd really like to get back into it.

Here's a pastel sketch from one of the last sessions. Because of the longer class length I was able to do colour work where previously I'd only been doing short pencil or charcoal sketches:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzDSadyRrTylXGbU7iZ4POL7lvfvGN0E4TbvVItzJTa1-s7AFZRCkEk7mGeX7KEDx-dCEJkCujJOkDHRhW0d6oZ1ViTgkBIazuH8OsCbsAFqLTwdrr29GXzCbzZPp3SOiuntSj3Q/s400/P1010002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5100452936788812498" />

I've got most of my life drawing up on this thread HERE on the CGTalk website, if anyone's interested (obviously loads of nudity!)FEShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17981731301608493164noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27682205.post-25440381616067202382007-08-14T12:09:00.000+01:002007-08-14T13:10:58.364+01:00Trying out ArtRage 2.5 with a Sketch<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFu2T3CQMsXnHmVjtXvFkffMPcN9FW5dv8LpmeG6qF2v2oYGbhjcspxPuyhjNSQOiopDF4y_UO23I5982av7obtTTEyk1zu3a9ElvM7iZQueTNKeOrYsUqWvWKrD5YtoXNHHJMYQ/s400/head.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098514750908902386" />
I thought it was about time I put up something else here. This is a made-up face I did to try out the ArtRage 2.5 paint program.... I did the above sketch using the Pencil brush on the face (well, plus the eraser!), and the chalk brush on the hair. I used the chalk brush because the pencil brush does not enlarge much and stays as a relatively small line.

I was testing out the Pencil brush because it was recommended by Frog as a very good sketch tool and I can't resist trying out paint programs.

I decided to purchase the full ArtRage (I already had the free version but never really used it) because the v2.5 looked a lot better. I have to say that I really like the pencil and chalk tools. Feels much more like using a real pencil as you can actually shade properly (can't do this very easily in any other program - you end up with a load of lines not proper pencil shading).

The only problem I found was that you have very limited control on texture the darker you get. Especially with the Chalk. You can adjust and change the paper texture which will affect the brush texture, but it's not particularly intuitive, and I would like a bit more control over the brushes themselves. However for roughly £15(incl vat)(US$25) I can't complain. It will be very useful for doodling out rough ideas.

I did find that exporting to .psd did make the image come out slightly darker (I was only using black and white), but exporting to .tiff did not affect the tone. However this could be easily corrected in Photoshop using levels.

There's some niffy stencil and ruler options and the ability to rotate the canvas is great.

However some of the functions are not obvious and hard to find.... ie if you want to permanently flip a layer you have to click on an arrow next to the selected layer, select 'Transform Layer Contents', then a tool bar will pop up, then you have to click on the side arrow and select flip horizontal or vertical. Admittedly, after you have selected 'Transform Layer Contents' you can just hit 'H' or 'V' but it's a bit longwinded. Hitting 'H' or 'V' in normal circumstances will flick your image either horizontally or vertically while you hold the key down, which is handy, but you can't draw on the flipped image. Plus there's no selection function, so you can't cut and paste parts of a layer, although you can rotate, scale or flip the entire layer through the 'Transform Layer Contents' function.

I'm less keen on the paint tools - bit too hit and miss for my tastes. I'll be sticking with Painter X there still. You can get rid of the impasto look on the paint by hitting the F5 key (PC), you loose the paper texture on the screen, but the pencil/chalk/crayon textures still work. I personally found the brushes cluncky when it comes to subtle blending and I still wanted to be able to tweek them more to my taste. So for sketching... yes, for painting (me personally)... no. Though it's a great introduction for anyone just starting into digital painting, without breaking the bank.FEShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17981731301608493164noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27682205.post-65332186457298482272007-05-22T14:11:00.000+01:002007-05-22T18:19:19.179+01:00Inspired by Drawing Board Jam
This image was inspired by the Drawing Board Jam for May. Everything went fairly smoothly apart from the old cut here and there from sharp parts (why do so many bits that go into a PC seem to have razorlike edges?!?) and a few swear words when screws didn't want to screw in properly... but it was up and running almost with no hitches or major crashes.

So after fiddling around with stuff and updating stuff I think to myself... well it's time to knuckle down and draw something. So, I try to boot up Painter X.... and up comes this error message

"This copy of painter has been damaged or illegally modified. Please reinstall from your original disks".

"What!?!? " I say to myself "oh oh"

So I try to repair it. I uninstall it. I reinstall it.

Still I get the same bloomin' message. I know this isn't the end of the world. Painter IX.5 still works fine.... but I HATE it when things don't work and I don't know why. And I'd only just bought the upgrade too....

So I Google it. And thank goodness there is one English response with exactly the same error message. It was on a Dealtime review here (basically search for and delete all registry entries called "Protexis" (I think it was about 2 entries), being carefully not to touch anything else in case you completely wreck your PC). Thank you theuerkorn who ever you are.... you saved my bacon! After doing what you said Painter X is now working fine!

Phew!

*****

Just thought I'd add a little update for anyone with this problem. I passed on the info on another forum board (TalkGraphics.com see thread HERE) and it seems you have to delete the Protexis files after installation, but before trying to open the program.

So after uninstalling and then reinstalling Painter, do START>>RUN>>typeREGEDIT Search for all PROTEXIS files [two of them] and DELETE (being careful that's all you delete - remember to backup the reg first just in case). And only then open the program.

Maybe that's what I did without remembering I did it.
